OLD NEWS
December 14, 2006
Hey Folks:
Last Friday El Smoko had the pleasure of playing to a
SRO Crowd at Ernies in Victoria. First time I've been
there in quite some time.
My Right hand Amiga, Angelena, showed up with her
hubby Joe and helped me present a check for $1000 from
the Party In The Pasture to the Salvation Army during
one of the breaks. Great time.
This week looks like El Smoko is going to be back at
Earnies in Victoria on Saturday, Dec. 16th. The music
will start after the Cowboy's game and will go till
1am. Come on out, watch the game, eat some great
food, have a couple of adult beverages, and meet my
new drummer, "Electric Bob".
We hope to see you there. Might want to call ahead
for reservations and/or directions. Call
361-572-4188.

Hola Amigo y Amigas:
Well it looks like El Smoko is back from several trips
to the West. Had a great time but didn’t find
anyplace (yet) to move to out in the Ruidoso area.
I need to see all of you at the 205 Bar in Victoria
this Thursday night November 30th starting at 9pm.
This will be my first performance in this area for awhile and I’m
looking forward to the gig and to seeing all of you again.
This is a great mixed drink bar with a laid
back atmosphere. I'll be the one on the stool playing
guitar and harmonica, with my trusty drummer "Electric
Bob".
Call 361-578-2051 for directions and/or reservations.
I hope to see you there.

Hey Folks:
Well we finally got everything cleaned up and kinda
back to normal at the creek bottom. What a truly
great time was had by all at the 9th annual Party In
The Pasture. We had some very talented folks that
pitched in and helped put this one on and it sure made
it a lot better and much smoother. My right hand lady
(kinda my kid) Angelia Gayle produced the program,
sold the adds, and did a bang up job. It is a real
collectors item!!! Mary Beth Finney and the whole
Cuero Turkey Fest gang took care of the concessions,
Great food, very organized. Dana Witte stepped up and
did a super job of organizing the Cook Off, her first
time!!. My Texas Music had their mall set up and kept
folks provided with stuff from the PIP. My sister
Jane was in charge of the gate and she and her crew
kept things running smoothly at that end. And my old
amigos Tommy Little and Richard Wagner were in charge
of security and like always we had no problems. Folks
come to a show like this to have fun not to cause
trouble. My old amigo Scott Smith organized and ran
the "Acoustic Stage" on Friday and Saturday and made
everyone sound great and had a very talented bunch of
performers lined up for everyone's entertainment.
Pitchfork Sound, Grant Wilborn, provided the super
sound for the big stage. Last but not least most
people used the trash dumpster and we had very little
clean up after the weekend. Thanks to all of you.
You are super!!!
Now back to the musical line up. The Acoustic Stage
went something like this. Butch Morgan came down from
San Antonio and wowed the crowd with his great guitar
playing and catchy vocals. My old Compadre Tommy
Elskes wandered in from Albuquerque and did his now
famous blow everyone away with his talent. What a
guy! Wicked Brew and The Scott Wiggins Band graced us
with their talent and put on a heck of a show. The
Electric Moonshine Band and Matt Deaton and Front
Porch Texas played way into the night and kept
everyone in a real party mood. Gordon "Doc" Barth
(Yes he is a real doctor. Mine in fact) showed up and
put on one of his special acoustic sets. John Flores
of Bay Town made the show this year. What a truly
talented man. Nancy Brundrett made it down on
Saturday and played some of her special music. And
then there is Ashley Rose from San Antonio who came
down promoting her new CD and performing on the
Acoustic Stage on Saturday. She is almost 17 now and
just keeps getting better!!! Kin Townsend, now from
Austin, and a real favorite of mine, made the show
this year and was her usual talented self. One of my
favorites, Jack Levitt from San Antonio put on a great
show. These guys just keep getting better and better.
But the real sleeper of the Acoustic Stage was my new
Amigos The Pear Ratz from George West. I heard these
guys a couple of months ago and thought they were just
OK, but Friday night they blew everyone away!! What a
great high energy show!!! Even let me play a little
harp with them. Keep up the good work guys.
The big stage on Saturday was opened by Texas Tea from
Victoria, one of the best little rock and roll bands
in this part of the world. Kim Carson and The Buffalo
Speedway Band now from Austin/Houston brought her
whole band down and what a great talent and super
lady. Scott Smith and OSO Texas from Corpus made it
down and put on their usual great show. I had the
"HighWay" Band with me and I really feel fortunate to
be able to perform with this group of seriously
talented folks. However the real stars of the evening
were my buddies from Goliad, Highspeed Hayride. I
said several years ago that these guys had the
potential to "Go all the Way" and they didn't
disappoint anyone in that respect. What a great bunch
of guys that prove what hard work and talent can
produce. What a show. Thanks Amigos.

that are already making plans for the PIP this year.
It should be a blast.
We’ve got a new “Band Van” to haul our lazy butts

All the seats recline and the back bench seat folds

Texans Don't Litter -
on Saturday May 13th. Fortunately, Victoria was chosen as one of the
sights for the litter campaign. There will be all kinds of freebies that
volunteers will be eligible for INCLUDING free tickets on

Hi Folks:
Wow, what a week!!!!! We played at the "Down At The
Barge Dock" stage at the Buc Days BBQ Challenge and
Rodeo in Corpus Christi on Thursday last week and
Friday on the Buccaneer stage at Buc Days. Great
time, met a bunch of like minded folks that are
already planning for Party In The Pasture. Ray Wylie
Hubbard was the headliner on Thursday and really put
on a great show. Also got to visit with him the next
morning at breakfast. He really had a super bunch of
musicians with him....Good Stuff.
Saturday we had the pleasure of playing with perhaps
the best guitar player in Texas and recipent of the
MTM "Musician of the Year" award for 2005, Big John
Mills, at the Bluebonnet Festival at Kennedy.
Before the Street Dance that we played for I hosted
the Acoustic Stage at the Festival, and had some very
serious and talented folks that showed up to favor us
with their talent and time.
Carolyn Arington, came out and did her usual great job
on her original music, Steve Bryne of Cuero came out
and did some spiritual acoustic music. Great voice
and performer. "Bear" showed up and absouloutely
wowed the crowd with his spiritual side. What an
entertainer!! Peter and Paula Higgins and their band
"Driftwood" from Moulton put on a great show, Kim
Price came down and wowed us all with her great
singing and guitar playing. Bill Eli showed up with
his trio and left everyone wanting more. Patrick
Godby, whom I met last year at a gig at Alice's
restaurant, came down with his bass player and really
put on a great show. First time I had heard him on
acoustic guitar, yeah he has a Martin now!! Stay with
the acoustic amigo you really rock. And of course
Kennedy native Nancy Brundrett closed out the acoustic
show with her on brand of semi folkish kinda rock
style of music. What a great show. Thanks to
everyone. Kenedy was duly impressed with the variety
of talent on display in their town.

Hey Folks:
Just gotta put in a plug for one of those “Magic”
places that you discover every now and then.
I had the pleasure of performing at the Outrigger
Restaurant in Palacios this Saturday, and I must say I
need to recommend this spot to everyone who gets even
close to it in their travels. The food is super, I
had fried shrimp (And I know shrimp) and it’s as good
as I have ever had period!! The atmosphere is like
something out of the New Orleans area, Not Burbon
Street, but one of those great little places that are
hidden out in the moss covered bayou country where the
locals go to get really good sea food. The old wooden
building is filled with memrobelia, including a great
portrat of Wayne, Cheryl, and family done several
years ago.
I sold a bunch of cd’s and had a great time performing
for the folks there. We, the band, will be back down
there the first Saturday in June, 3rd on the outside
patio area of the Outrigger, where Larry Joe plays
when he is down there. I’m already excited!!!
For more information you can contact Wayne and Cheryl
Dodd, good folks, at the Outrigger Restaurant at 6th
and Commerce in Palacios, Tx. Ph 361-972-1479. They
have their menu on line at www.outriggerrestaurant.com
Last Thursday My Amiga Bonnie Riley and I performed at
the World Famous 205 Bar in Victoria, Tx. I really
like this place, and of course Bonnie sounded great.
I need to record something with her as soon as we have
time.
I’m gonna take a little road trip to Amarillo next
week and will be back to play for Leslie Koening’s
kinda, sorta, semi annual music blow out at Turner
Hall, Near Yoakum. Leslie does this every now and
then and it is a first class operation he does for his
kids. Larry Joe TAylor will be there with us for this
private party.
Be sure to request “The Motel” on Lone Star Radio in
Victoria. They have “Motel’ Programmed into their

Hi Folks: Wednesday last My old compadre Butch Morgan invited me

Campers", Kevin Lewis, RB Blackstone, and young Trevor
Doak Morgan, Butch's son with him. Great bunch of
musicians. Also on the bill were Kim Townsend, one of
the best singer/songwriters I have heard in quite a
while. Very witty uplifting music and the lady can
really play guitar. Got to hear the Laven Family. A
family from the area that put on a good show. The
youngest is 13, and she writes her on songs and plays
a pretty mean guitar herself. Then out of the night
comes Jay Urbano, local Blues Legend. Just kinda
showed up and put on one heck of a show. I had a good
time and thanks Butch for inviting me.

Charlie Cole to the 5th annual South Texs Music Fest
and Chili Cook Off at Sharkey's in Port Aransas,

We were fortunate to share the bill with some real
talent. Acts such as Trigger Fish, J.T. Coldfire,
Django Walker, Jr. Brown and others. What a night and
day. If you miss this one well, shame on you.
Triggerfish was super as usual, Their conga player,
Louis Villereal, played on my last CD. What a talent.
JT Coldfire did his usual stuff, tore a telecaster to
shreads!!! Great talent, energy to burn, and a nice
guy to boot. Django Walker put on a good show. Super
band and he really is a nice guy. Very polite, I'll
bet Jerry Jeff is proud of him. And then came Jr.
Brown. What a killer guitar player.....Nuff said!!

Hola Amigos:
Last week was hot and lots of fun. We played at the
Spot in Port O'Connor Friday and The Half Moon
celebration in Shiner with our good buddy Egon Barthels
of 104,7 FM Lone Star Radio in Victoria, along with
one of my favorite bands High Speed Hayride, and The
Shiner Hobo Band and the headliner Rhythm of the Road.
Monday the Fourth I volunteered to help out at the
Episcipal Church in Cuero for the kiddo's fair in down
town Cuero on the asphalt. Yes it was very hot. I
was in charge of the rubber ducky pond!! Kids would
give me a ticked and then pick up a duck and win a
prize. I had a duck call that I had to blow. I was
really good at that!! I guess I have found my spot in life.
This week:
July 9, Sat. The band "Texas Highway" is going to
play Maddens in Port O'connor. I'm really looking
forward to this one. Lot's of good friends down in

un-operable cancer and as everyone knows the expenses
of combating cancer in any form is sometimes
overwhelming. A large group very talented
musicians/singers/songwriters from all over the state

Hey Folks:
El Smoko just returned from a trip to the deep piney
woods of Far East Texas. What a real treat. The
weather was balmy, the forrests green and the
hospitality outstanding. I got to visit with Lucky
and Jenelle Boyd, founders of My Texas Music.com.
(Jenelle is a really good cook) I got to see the Venue
where the awards show will be this year. The Music
City Texas Theater is something straight out of New
Orleans or San Fransisco. Red Brick, Valted celings,
Exposed beams, giant stage, and a great sound system.
The Awards show is being held in Don Hendley's home
town of Linden, Texas and if you don't make the show
this year you're really gonna miss out.
This is what MTM has been sending out.

Howdy Folks:
Well here we go again.
Last week I had one of those rare events that seems to
kinda sneak up on you when you least expect it. Ryan
Henderson of Lone Star Radio, called me and asked if I
could go to College Station and play a song swap with
Tommy Alverson. Retorical question. Of course I
wanted to go!!!! Tommy is one of the best in the
business and just getting to listen to him was worth
the trip. Tommy was in great form and he and I
entertained a super crowd of folks at the Burbon
Street Bar and Grill In College Station. What a great
venue for songwriters. Folks knew a bunch of my
music, (I get a lot of air play in that area) sold a
lot of cd's and got some folks who can't wait for the
Party In The Pasture!!!! Stayed up too late
etc.......... Thanks guys.
OUR SCHEDULE FOR THIS WEEK LOOKS LIKE THIS:
Mar. 18, Fri.
Gonna have the full band at the world Famous Schroeder
Saloon in Schroeder TX. Close to Victoria, TX. My
home away from home. The ocasion is that someone
learned that it was Dave Avery's birthday!!! (Dave
does the morning show at 104.7, Lone Star radio out of
Victoria) Great guy and a good friend. We couldn't
pass this one up. Come on out and join the party.
Got some real surprises for you musically speaking.
